Fila is a classic shoe brand that has been around for ages. Most people have owned a Fila at some point, as they are some of the most comfortable shoes. So it should not come as a surprise that many runners want to know if they can run in their Filas.
The simple answer is yes, you can run in your Fila shoes. But only if you buy a model with the typical characteristics of running shoes. The pair should have a breathable upper and cushioned midsole. And the sole should also offer excellent traction.
Things are, however, not always that straightforward. For instance, how can you tell your Filas are ideal for running? Also, what are the pros and cons of running in Filas?
Filas were one of my first running shoes over a decade ago. I still have a pair to date, so you can trust that I have firsthand experience with the brand. In this article, I will explain 8 factors you need to know about running in Fila shoes. I also tell you if they are comfortable and why they seem very cheap. So make sure you stick with me to the end!
What are Filas Running Shoes?
Fila is one of the oldest shoe manufacturers in the world. The company has been in business for more than 100 years. It was started in 1911 by Italian brothers Ettore and Giansevero Fila. The company initially focused on manufacturing textiles. They also made clothing for people around the Italian Alps.
Fila started manufacturing sportswear in the early 1970s. They started making everything from shorts to sports shoes. But Fila mostly focused on tennis. Fila even entered a sponsorship deal with one of the most famous tennis players of all time, Björn Borg, in the 1980s. Their sponsorship made the brand more famous. Its following grew tremendously in the USA.
The company has since ventured into manufacturing sportswear for most other sports. They have gear for everything from soccer to basketball. They now mostly focus on making lifestyle and fashion-oriented footwear. Still, they have a decent market share in the running shoe industry. Fila has developed several lines of running shoes over the years.

Why It is Important to Choose Proper Running Shoes
I learned the importance of wearing proper shoes the hard way. In my early days as a runner, I used to wear anything comfortable when running. However, a few years later, I had no choice but to get proper running shoes. This was after several foot injuries and problems like plantar fasciitis.
If you are an upcoming runner still unsure whether to spend money on a pair of running shoes, here is why you should:
- Comfort: The sneakers you love might be comfy but they feel different when running. Running shoes are designed to remain comfortable as you run.
- Optimal performance: You will only reach your peak performance with the right shoes.
- Injury prevention: Good running shoes reduce the risk of getting injured. They provide adequate cushion and traction to make running safer for you.
FILA’s Performance in Running Shoes
The actual performance of your Fila running shoes depends on the specific model. Like all other shoe manufacturers, Fila uses different technologies on different shoes. Here is a general overview of how the brand performs. The overview is based on some of its popular models.
1. Overall Design
Fila’s running shoes look like any typical running shoe. The design is, however, more intricate than this when you get to wear them.
The design combines both functionality and style. I was not always a fan of Fila, but I just can’t get enough of them nowadays. I love their sleek silhouettes, and the colorways are also fantastic.
Fila does everything well when it comes to functionality and style. Their shoes can appeal even to runners who prefer to keep things simple. Just don’t expect to get a pair of Fila with too much going on.
2. Material
There is nothing that stands out when it comes to Fila’s material choice. They have managed to keep up with industry standards. Most of their shoes nowadays feature a lot of textiles, synthetics, and mesh.
Being a top brand, Fila focuses on making the most breathable and comfortable shoes. I have owned the same pair of FILA Sabbia Lite sneakers for over 5 years now. Although I have several other running shoes, I still wear them often. From the look of things, I will get a couple of years more from these fantastic shoes.

3. Midsole
Most running shoes nowadays have a fantastic midsole. These insoles provide the best cushioning and absorb impact when running. From my experience, Fila’s midsoles are far from the best.
Other brands like New Balance and Nike use more advanced midsole technologies. But, while Fila cannot offer the same level of comfort, their midsoles are still okay. Many of their sneakers and running shoes have an ethylene vinyl acetate.
The cushioning is hence quite decent when running on most terrains. The good thing is that you can always add an extra insole. I use extra inserts to make my Filas more comfortable.
4. Outsole
Rubber outsoles are the best for running shoes. While you can still get Fila shoes with rubber outsole, some have a PU sole.
The PU sole is lighter and hence helps make their shoes even more lightweight. Although it is less durable than rubber, it provides decent traction.
Your best bet is to go for a pair with rubber soles. Also, look for something with good treading. This ensures you get excellent traction on all surfaces.
5. Fit
Fila has been making shoes long enough to understand what runners want. They are among the few brands never forces me to go half a size up or down. Most of their shoes are always true to size.
That said, there are still some models where the sizes can be slightly off. Your best bet is to read customer reviews before buying. Check what others are saying about the size.
6. Versatility
The versatility of Fila shoes is hard to beat. I can wear my FILA Sabbia Lite anywhere. They are perfect for walks in the park or hiking, not just for running.
It is also common to see many people wearing Fila sportswear as everyday or streetwear shoes.
Besides the versatility of each of their shoes, they also offer variety. Fila has shoes for almost every sport you can think of. Runners can also get shoes for trail, cross, or road running.
7. Arch Support
Shoe brands like Asics and Brooks have invested heavily in arch support technologies. It is hard to find a Fila shoe that matches the arch support you get from these brands.
Still, Fila shoes have decent arch support. Unless you have tried out these other brands, you would not even notice that it is not the best.
Most Fila shoes provide adequate support and stability. It is, important to choose a pair that caters to your specific foot arch type.
8. Price
Filas are generally cheap. The brand offers some of the cheapest shoes compared to top brands like Brooks and New Balance.
You can get a decent pair of Fila running shoes for as little as $50. Even their premium models are at most $200. Other top brands have some shoe models retailing for upwards of $1,000.

Pros and Cons of Fila Running Shoes
Filas will be fantastic running shoes if you choose the right model. Still, like any other brand, they have their pros and cons. Here is a quick overview:
Pros
- Affordability: Fila is a more affordable brand. While their shoes are still not the cheapest, they are more affordable than other top brands. A good pair of Fila running shoes can cost a fraction of what you would spend on New Balance or Brooks.
- Versatility: Their shoes do not have a restrictive design or appearance. They also have nice colors and look good. These shoes are hence quite versatile. You can wear them when running and also as weekend sneakers.
- Lightweight: Fila running shoes are some of the lightest. If you hate heavy shoes or have problematic feet, you will love them. The synthetics and textiles used on most of their shoes keep their weight quite low. Sometimes I even forget that I am wearing any shoes as I hardly feel any mass on my feet.
- Durability: Fila shoes surprisingly hold up well despite their lower price tag. As mentioned earlier on, I have worn mine for over 5 years. I also have a friend that has been wearing his Fila shoes for much longer than this.
Cons
- Limited Tech: Fila shoes have relatively limited tech. And this is more so when compared to what you get from other top brands. The company does not use many cutting-edge technologies as most runners nowadays expect.
- Narrow Selection: Fila does not have that many models of running shoes. Brands focusing on the running shoe market, like New Balance, offer a wider selection. The choice is much more limited for Fila.
- Availability Issue: I have seen a few complaints from runners not being able to find Fila shoes. This is probably because they do not have that many running shoe options. The few models available are harder to find compared to other global brands.
- Less Popular Brand: Fila is not a very trendy brand. Some people, especially younger ones, find the brand too basic. Others even say their shoes are ugly and out of fashion.
Are Fila Shoes Recommended for Beginners or Experienced Runners?
Filas are ideal for beginner runners. Still, that depends on a specific runner’s preferences. There are many experienced runners out there that wear Filas. These runners swear by their performance.
That said, the more affordable price tag makes them perfect for beginners. You want to avoid splashing out a fortune when you are just starting. As a beginner, you are unsure what shoe type will work well for you. Also, you might not run that regularly.
Filas might also not support the high-performance experienced runners want. They are lacking in technology and might not meet serious athletes’ needs.
Are Fila Shoes Good for Walking?
Yes, Fila shoes are perfect walking shoes. They are comfortable enough, thanks to the EVA cushioning and nice feet. Plus, most have a highly breathable upper that is often made of mesh. You will hence never have to worry about sweaty feet when walking.
With that in mind, I recommend choosing a Fila shoe model designed for walking. Besides breathability, ensure the shoe has a good sole. The sole should provide adequate traction in the terrains you walk on. Also, make sure it is lightweight enough to minimize foot fatigue.

Are Fila Shoes Good for Standing All-day?
Generally, they are good for standing all day. That said, this largely depends on the model you buy, as they are obviously different.
You want something super comfortable with a well-cushioned interior. The cushioning helps takes some pressure off your feet. Also, the shoes should be breathable to ensure your feet don’t get sweaty.
You will also need a Fila shoe that is lightweight. Something heavy will not just work as your feet will get tired quickly.
Are Fila Shoes Good for Working Out?
Yes, some models are perfect for working out. These models have all the important features of workout shoes. For instance, they are lightweight (most Fila shoes are quite light) and comfortable.
Whether or not your Fila shoes are good for working out depends on what you do. Look for a pair that supports the specific activity you will be doing. For example, will you be running or cross-training?
Why are Fila Shoes so Cheap?
The main reason is because they are primarily made in Asia. The production costs are much lower in Asia compared to the USA.
Also, Fila’s business strategy is usually to sell more affordable shoes. Their target market has less spending power. Plus, they do not have the same brand perception as others like Nike. It would be hard to compete with such companies if they sell expensive shoes.
Are Fila Shoes Comfortable
Yes, they are quite cozy. Their EVA foam cushioning and breathable mesh uppers make them quite comfy. Plus, they have a well-padded collar and a true-to-size fit. Both further add to their overall comfort.
It should be obvious by now that all this depends on what model you choose. Fila also has several shoe models that can be pretty uncomfortable.
Conclusion
Fila makes some fantastic sports shoes. They are also one of the cheapest top brands. Fila is a good bet if you are in the market for high-quality running shoes on a budget.
Still, like all other shoe brands, they have several models. It is important to choose a good model. Look for something breathable, well-cushioned, and with a good sole. Such a shoe will enhance your performance and prevent injuries when running.
